His Excellency Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), Governor of Lagos State, handed over 100 new TATA Waste Compactor Trucks to the Private Sector (PSP) Operators with a call on all Nigerians to pay greater attention to the environment around them in order to enhance the quality of their lives. The compactor trucks were acquired from TATA AFRICA SERVICES (NIGERIA) LIMITED, a subsidiary of the TATA Group – India, with funding support from Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc.

Also present at the occasion were the Managing Director of LAWMA – Mr. Ola Oresanya, Executive Director of TATA NIGERIA - Mr. Sudeep Ray, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Environment – Dr. (Mrs.) Titi Anibaba, Managing Director of Stanbic IBTC - Mrs.Sola David-Bortha, President of AWAM - Mr. Adegboyega Adepitan, the former Commissioner for Environment - Mr. Tunji Bello, top officials of LAWMA, the PSP operators, the Traditional Rulers of Lagos and other top government functionaries.

His Excellency Governor Fashola, who spoke at the handover ceremony which took place at the Olusosun Landfill in Ojota, said that the quality of the environment goes a long way in determining not only the well being but also the life expectancy of the people living in such environment. He further said that the acquisition of the new compactor trucks became necessary following complaints by the PSP operators that their fairly used trucks worked against their efficiency, were costlier to maintain and therefore impacted negatively on the profitability and turn- around time which compromised the overall effectiveness of the waste management system in Lagos.

In his speech, the Executive Director of TATA NIGERIA, Mr. Sudeep Ray, assured overall service support to the PSP operators for a hassle free operation by setting up dedicated Mobile service teams for giving adequate service back up to the operators whenever such need arose. He said that the company had adequate stock of spare parts required for the maintenance and upkeep of these compactors. He also promised regular training workshops to be conducted for the PSP operators, their drivers and their technical personnel.

TATA Motors, one of the World’s leading Commercial Vehicle Brands, manufactures various cost effective solid waste transfer and collection vehicles which are suitable for African conditions and environment. After much deliberation and the conduct of a feasibility and technical study of different brands of compactors, LAWMA ultimately decided to purchase the TATA Compactors, for high quality, ruggedness, efficiency and cost effectiveness. Apart from Garbage compactors TATA Motors also manufactures various other application vehicles which can help Governments, Institutions and Corporate bodies to support their efforts and activities.
